Urge Governor Newsom to sign AB 280
AB 280, the California Mandela Act by Asm. Chris Holden will limit the use of solitary confinement in jails, prisons and private immigration detention facilities. Solitary confinement is torture, and causes permanent harm to anyone who experiences it. A 2023 report by the nonpartisan California Research Bureau found that California stands to save more than 50 million dollars a year by reducing the use of solitary confinement. The report also found that using solitary confinement did not make facilities safer from violence. https://tinyurl.com/casolitreport
AB 280 will ensure that California has comprehensive limits to how solitary confinement is used, and protects specific populations including pregnant people and those with disabilities from being held in solitary confinement. New York and other states have passed similar legislation and it is time for California to join them.
Oppose SB733 on Solitary Confinement
The California Mandela Campaign opposes SB 733 by Glazer. This bill proposes a data collection scheme for CDCR facilities, but from our perspective is intended to take the place of any limitation on the use of solitary confinement, and is a major step backwards from what the legislature has already voted to enact: The Mandela Act, AB280.
